Barış Bakır MD is Radiology Professor at Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. He got his medical degree at Ankara University in 1999. He completed his specialization in the Radiology Department of Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine in 2005. He worked as a permanent specialist physician between 2005 and 2010 and as an Associate Professor between 2010 and 2018 at Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine.
Barış Bakır's main area of expertise is prostate imaging. Until today, he has examined over 10.000 Multiparametric Prostate MRI assays, has many publications and papers on the subject alongside experience of making congress presentations on numerous occasions. He visited National Cancer Institute, Molecular Imaging Program (NIH) Department in Washington directed by Prof Dr. Peter L. Choyke and Dr.Barış Türkbey MD in order to follow the scientific developments on Multiparametric Prostate MRI in 2013 and 2015.
In addition to the Multiparametric Prostate MR assay, he also performs studies in clinical practice and scientific research on molecular hybrid imaging techniques (PSMA PET-mpMRI), one of the most advanced imaging methods of prostate gland, with Cerrahpaşa Istanbul University, Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine - Department of Nuclear Medicine.
Besides, his primary areas of interest are diagnostic and therapeutic interventional procedures for prostate gland. In Europe and America, he has visited centers specializing in Prostate Fusion biopsy. He has participated in prostate MR/TRUS fusion biopsy procedures with Dr.Antti Sakari Ranniko in Meilhati Hospital, Helsinki, and with Dr. Ionel Valentin Popeneciu in Heidelberg University Urology Department, Heidelberg. He has performed over 1000 prostate MR/TRUS fusion biopsy procedures so far.
Barış Bakır MD is also interested in focal treatments for Prostate Cancer and has worked abroad in centers specializing in Prostate Focal Treatment. He participated in prostate HIFU, Cryothrapy and Nanoknife procedures performed by Prof. Dr. L. Shalhav in Chicago University, Dr. Samuel J. Peretsman in The Novant Health Cancer Clinic, North Carolina, Dr. Martin Loehr at the Klinik für Prostate Therapie, Heidelberg, Prof.Dr. Hashim U. Ahmedi at Imperial College-Charing Cross Hospital, London, and Prof.Dr.Mark Emberton, King Edward VII’s Hospital, London. He visited Prof. Dr. Markus Hohenfellner at Heidelberg University, Heidelberg to study prostate MR-HIFU (in-bore) system. Currently Barış Bakır has been performing Prostate HIFU and NanoKnife treatments since 2019. He is one of the most experienced physician is this field in his country. He has performed over 150 prostate cancer focal therapy procedures so far.
Furthermore, Barış Bakır has published more than 80 articles and attended over 100 conferences within national and international meetings. He has organized several training courses on Prostate MR and Prostate Fusion Biopsy methods in Turkey. He is a member of the North American Radiology Association, the European Association of Radiology, the International Focal Therapy Association, the European Association of Gastrointestinal Radiology, the European Association of Uroradiology and the Turkish Radiology Association.
